I’ve installed WordPress Related Posts plugin, now what?

Write.

Want to attract readers to your blog? Provide them with something worth reading. Blogging is a process of endless researching and editing, because writing a good story takes time and effort, but don’t overthink it.

Most bloggers have to deal with challenges of how to

  • create quality content,
  • create enough of it,
  • make it engaging!

While we can help you with the first two, we can do so much more about the last one by suggesting you interesting related content you can use to enrich your blog post.

Originality matters!

Stealing content from others (plagiarism is plain ol’ stealing) won’t get you a badge of honor, no matter how hard you try. Reposting content from others is cheating – even if you add attribution to original authors. Many services, including Technorati and Zemanta, consider such un-original repostings as poor quality content.

Nope, doesn’t help. Will write a mail with screen shots.

You mustn’t worry about that Katherine. In this instance, display of the thumbnail image is transformative, does not take away from the market for the underlying image, and serves a valuable societal function (i.e., of allowing internet users to find “related articles,” in much the same way a search engine would). The thumbnail image also links through to the original article, so to the extent internet users click through, they will access the full size image — if at all — only in the original article. Indeed, use of the images in this manner is no different from use of images by Google (image search) or LinkedIn (where users are allowed to posts links to articles of possible interest to their connections).

Hope that cleared things up a bit, but please do let me know if I missed something out, since I’d gladly help! Let me know! Here’s my email address: support[at]zemanta[dot]com

Hey Katherine, thanks for your comments on this touchy subject, we’d love to discuss about it! (And sorry for the late, too-late reply, horrible, I know!)

As for your comments — yes, we mostly agree, but it’s really hard to hold on to an idea, especially if you publish it or put it out in the public. But we can hardly discuss these matters that are far beyond our reach, I’m afraid to say.

How do we protect ourselves? Well, we all have to be careful what we publish and what we are willing to risk — only as much as we are ready to loose, in my humble opinion. But we are very strict against copy & pasted material, which we will “police”.

Let me know what you think about it, since I’d love to hear your thought on this. Here’s my email address: support[at]zemanta[dot]com

Take care & have a nice day!

Hey Carole, thanks for commenting on such delicate matter, we appreciate your thoughts! (And sorry for the super-late reply!)

As for your inquiry — well, as long as you do it in merit and if you give credit where credit’s due, this is OK with us. But as with everything else in life: moderation is key.

Hope that cleared things up a bit, but please do let me know if you have any more questions regarding this matter, since I’d love to help you out! Here’s my email address: support[at]zemanta[dot]com

Take care & have a nice day!

Hey David, sorry for the late, too-late reply, totally our fault (won’t happen again)! And I hope you don’t mind me replying on Mateja’s behalf.

As for your inquiry — hmm, this is certainly something that we haven’t crossed before, at least not that we would remember of, to be completely honest. But we would love to investigate further, if you agree — may I ask you what’s the blog in question? Is there an example blog post where those broken links (or those mismatch links) are still visible, so that we could have a closer look?

Any additional feedback is greatly appreciated! Here’s my email address: support[at]zemanta[dot]com

Looking forward to your reply, since we’re eager to help you out! Take care & have a nice day!

Hey, sorry for the late, too late follow up — but we’d still love to help you out, if possible!

What’s the blog in question? Do you have any images in your blog posts? Are those at least 151×151 pixels big?

Let us know, we’re eager to get this sorted ASAP! Here’s my email address: support[at]zemanta[dot]com

I’m looking forward to your reply! Take care & have a nice day!

Yes, in a way that’s true, but still — originally created content cannot be completely the same to something that’s already been published (somewhere else). At least not the whole article — all words in the exact same order.

Or did you have something else in mind? Let us know, we’d love to help!

    Take care!

Hey, thanks for reaching out & sorry for not responding any sooner!

But I’m not sure what do you mean by “searching photos on your page” — do you want to find certain images that are already posted on your blog or would you like to insert them in your future blog posts via our widget?

Let me know, I’d love to help you out! Here’s my email address: support[at]zemanta[dot]com

Take care & I’m looking forward to your reply!

Hey Stephanie, thanks for your feedback on this, appreciated!

But I’m not exactly sure what do you mean by that “link status” — are you referring to the rel=”follow” & rel=”no-follow” links or something else?

Bear in mind that all links inserted via our widget are OK with Google, as long as they are inserted by the user (author) and not automatically. You can find a few blog post (two from Google, one from us) below that will hopefully shed some more light on this matter.

    Googles Webmaster blog: zem.si/1eWwLac & Blogger Buzz: zem.si/R9gtNs & us: zem.si/Stcvyr

Also — all those inserted links can also be marked as objectionable in your Zemanta Dashboard, if you wish.

In any case — do let me know what you had in mind or if you have any more questions regarding our service and I’ll do my best to help you out! Here’s my email address: support[at]zemanta[dot]com

Take care & I’m looking forward to your reply!

Hey Nisha, thanks for reaching out on this & please accept my sincerest apologies for not responding any sooner!

Is the problem still there or were you able to solve it in the meantime? If not, go to your plugin settings and tick the box next to the “Auto Insert Related Posts” box & click on the ‘Save’ button.

Did that help or does the problem persist? Let me know, I’m eager to help you out on this! Here’s my email address: support[at]zemanta[dot]com

One of the best related post plugin, because run faster and no freeze

  • Don

Why would that be a BAD thing. It’s a good thing actually, since you are giving credit to a third party and that helps them right?

After updating it to latest version, this plugin is appearing twice on my posts. Kindly fix the bug.

Oh great. I also installed it and I’m loving it!

Nearly every topic has already been written about in some form or other. For example, creating a new website around travel or health would be impossible because these topics are so extensively written on, it would be impossible to write original content. As we know, if you write about health and exercise, what a person says on the internet has already been said a million times already.

  • ionet

hello , i installed the related post plugin and on the single page shows me random thumbnails , not the thumbnails that i set them what i must do ?

Hi Mateja, Zemanta was one of my favorite plugins till we got past 300 or more posts and then we started seeing mismatch of images between blogs and broken links. Sadly we stopped using it. Has anyone reported such a behavior to you guys?

  • http://www.alanedwardsfreelancer.com/ Alan Edwards

Katherine, are you saying that if you read an article about the risks of opening your own business, and you find the topic intriguing but have additional or different risks you want to write about that is plagiarism? I do not think this is what you mean or there would only be one book on any subject. Can you explain better. Thanks you.

  • http://CommonSenseLiving.com/ Carole

Devil’s advocate – Ok, I find a good piece of content that I like. I publish a post on it including an excerpt and credit which give the original author links and more exposure. Is this a bad thing?

  • Katharine

Also, how does Zemanta feel about when my content goes automatically to, say, facebook, and the Z photos go with it? Should I delete those? Or is it considered great exposure? or what? Thanks.

  • Katharine

So can we discuss curating and other near-miss situations, and how to protect ourselves? Thanks!

  • Katharine

Actually, plagiarism is only stealing the idea and rewriting it a bit. Taking the whole thing without any attribution is called piracy. Both are wrong, although plagiarism is often tolerated FAR too much in public high schools, in the name of education. But that is how we end up with so many twenty-somethings plagiarizing.

  • John Lombaerde

Yes. What is really important now it seems is Authority. If you guest post on sites with “blogging cred”, or Authority, or if you get people with “blogging cred” to guest post on your site, either way it will help you to gain some of that same “blogging cred”,
